Technology-Enhanced Testing to Measure Problem Solving Skills

With traditional standardized testing methods like multiple choice questions, it is often challenging to gauge students’ problem-solving skills directly. Furthermore, these types of tests tend to only score students by their ability to select correct answers rather than their ability to problem solve and collaborate in a team setting to come up with the best possible solution. The latter skillset is a highly desirable trait that employers look for especially in senior undergraduate students finishing their degrees and getting ready to join the workforce. With this in mind, a growing number of schools are beginning to design tests that assess and measure students by their ability to collaborate with others to come up with the best solution in more interactive ways [1].

Some universities are promoting and adopting AI technology to help gauge how well students understand course concepts as well as their ability to design the best solution strategies in collaboration with others critically. In 2015, The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) introduced technology-based tasks such as flying a rocket to the moon in conjunction with an AI bot to measure the effectiveness of student problem-solving skills. For example, the AI bot will evaluate students—individually and collectively—by how they apply open-ended questions to solve a given task [1]. Ultimately, the goals of these kinds of assessments are to help educators assess and prepare students with critical thinking skills.
